Corfu is a Greek island jewel

By John Wilmott, Telegraph

To the uninitiated, Corfu may have the reputation of a typical sun-and-fun holiday destination. But it is also an emerald jewel with diverse landscapes, some of Europe’s finest beaches and a riveting old capital, perfect for lovers of nature, history, traditional Greek culture and water sports... read more

He liked it so much he bought the village!

I can't help but wonder if the Greeks are fans of Desperate Housewives. For there's something about the flawlessness of the Rou estate that is reminiscent of a movie set: one for a film about a small rural hamlet on an 18th-century Greek isle. From the winding main coastal road, narrow lanes descend to idyllic little coves and bays, where life focuses around an often excellent taverna or two... read more

It took a while to find the "Strawberry-Pink Villa". Pleased to escape the racing traffic of the coast road, I parked the car and headed inland, climbing up through the olive groves to the suburb of Perama, south of Corfu Town. In 15 minutes I had swapped noise and pollution for leafy green peace - and entered a world unchanged since the Durrell family made its home there in the 1930s.... read more
